MPB — Música Popular Brasileira — is the sophisticated heart of Brazilian song, born in the mid-1960s when bossa nova met protest, poetry, and regional traditions. Its canon runs deep: Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Milton Nascimento, joined today by artists like Marisa Monte and Tim Bernardes. MPB stations move gracefully between samba-tinged grooves, tender ballads, and tropicália experiments. For listeners who want Brazil beyond the postcard, this is the genre.
