Garage rock is rock and roll with the training wheels thrown into a ditch: three chords, cheap amps, and maximum attitude. The original 1960s wave — The Sonics, The Kingsmen, the Nuggets-compilation universe — inspired punk a decade later and a full-blown revival in the 2000s via The White Stripes, The Hives, and Ty Segall's endless output. Stations in the genre embrace fuzz, reverb, and songs that end before they overstay. For anyone who thinks polish is where rock goes to die.
