Americana gathers the roots of American music under one worn denim jacket: country, folk, blues, gospel, and rock and roll, played with more regard for song than for charts. The tradition runs from Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, and The Band through Lucinda Williams and Wilco to current voices like Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, and Sturgill Simpson. Stations favor storytelling, pedal steel, and hosts who know their liner notes. It rewards listeners who like their music with dirt on its boots.
