Somali radio has an intensity born of necessity: through decades without stable central government, FM stations in Mogadishu, Hargeisa and the diaspora kept information flowing. Radio Mogadishu, the historic state broadcaster, returned to air alongside private outlets whose journalists work under real danger. The Somali language's poetic tradition translates naturally to radio, where poetry programmes rival music shows. Qaraami classics and modern Somali pop share the schedule with BBC Somali, a national institution.
