Maldivian radio began with the Voice of Maldives, the state service broadcasting in Dhivehi since the 1960s and reaching atolls scattered across 800 kilometres of ocean. Private FM stations emerged in Malé after media liberalisation in the 2000s. Boduberu — the islands' hypnotic drumming-and-dance tradition — features in cultural programming alongside Dhivehi pop, Hindi film music and Quranic recitation, reflecting a fully Muslim nation where the broadcast day observes prayer times.
