Synthpop made machines sing. Emerging as affordable synthesizers hit the market around 1980, it gave the world Depeche Mode, The Human League, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, and a-ha — icy electronics wrapped around some of pop's warmest melodies. The style never really left: CHVRCHES, La Roux, and the synthwave movement keep its neon flame lit. Stations blend classic 80s programming with modern revivalists. For listeners who believe a great chorus sounds even better with an arpeggiator underneath.
