Sertanejo is Brazil's country music and its biggest commercial force — born from rural viola caipira duets and transformed into stadium-filling pop. The classic duplas like Chitãozinho & Xororó and Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano paved the way for the sertanejo universitário wave of Jorge & Mateus, Marília Mendonça, and Gusttavo Lima. Songs favor big choruses about love, heartbreak, and barroom catharsis. Stations mix modas de viola with current hits, serving homesick Brazilians and new converts alike.
