Grunge came howling out of rainy Seattle around 1990, fusing punk attitude with Black Sabbath heaviness and a deep distrust of polish. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains defined the flannel-clad moment; Mudhoney and the Sub Pop underground supplied its scrappy soul. Stations devoted to the genre spin those catalogs alongside adjacent 90s alternative — Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots — and grunge-revival newcomers. For anyone who likes their guitars detuned and their feelings loud.
