Bossa nova drifted out of Rio de Janeiro's beachside apartments in the late 1950s — samba slowed to a whisper, harmonized like cool jazz, sung just above a breath. João Gilberto's guitar, Antônio Carlos Jobim's melodies, and Astrud Gilberto's voice on 'The Girl from Ipanema' carried it worldwide. Stations devoted to the style mix those founding records with Stan Getz collaborations and modern interpreters. Few genres are this effective at lowering a room's blood pressure while raising its style.
