Broadcasting inside Iran is controlled by IRIB, the state monopoly, whose radio networks cover news, Quranic programming, classical Persian music and provincial services in Azeri, Kurdish and other languages. The unofficial soundtrack is different: a vast Persian-language diaspora radio scene beams pop, rap and uncensored talk back home from Los Angeles and Europe. Traditional radif music and setar performances still find dedicated airtime on cultural channels.
