Bhutan came to broadcasting late and deliberately: the Bhutan Broadcasting Service began as a shortwave radio project in 1973, and radio remains woven into the kingdom's Gross National Happiness ethos. Programming in Dzongkha, Sharchhopkha, Lhotshamkha and English carries Buddhist teachings, government news and rigsar pop — the modern genre blending traditional melodies with electronic backing. Kuzoo FM, launched as a youth station, gave young Bhutanese their own voice on air.
