Russian radio pairs the state VGTRK networks, Radio Rossii and Mayak, with slick commercial brands like Europa Plus, Avtoradio, and Russkoye Radio, the latter playing Russian-language music exclusively. Pop, chanson (the distinctly Russian ballad genre), and talk dominate, almost entirely in Russian. Retro FM's Soviet-era hits and a strong tradition of literary and drama programming give the dial its own character.
