Ecuador holds a special place in radio history: missionary station HCJB, the Voice of the Andes, began shortwave broadcasts from Quito in 1931 and reached listeners worldwide for decades. Today Radio Pública del Ecuador carries the state's voice, while commercial and community stations broadcast in Spanish and Kichwa. Pasillo heritage music, tropical genres, and fervent football commentary define the country's listening habits.
